About Hidrofobia

Hidrofobia is a canyoneering route in the Sierra de Santiago, near the mountain hamlet of Potrero Redondo in the municipality of Santiago, Nuevo León. Santiago itself is about 36 kilometers south of Monterrey, and Potrero Redondo is a long climb beyond it on mountain roads. The canyon begins where the walk to the Cascada El Chipitín ends: at the turquoise pool below the waterfall, groups pull on wetsuits and carry on downstream into a gorge that sees far fewer people than its famous neighbor, Matacanes.

The name means "fear of water," a wry choice for a day spent mostly in it. The route is a long chain of jumps, swims, walking stretches and natural slides through pools whose water stays cold, between about 12 and 18 °C. The highest jumps reach roughly 18 meters, and the terrain between pools is rugged and little explored. Guides and local press describe it as more technical and less forgiving than Matacanes, and recommend it for people who already have some canyoneering experience. A full descent takes more than seven hours, so expect a very long day.

This is not a canyon to try on your own: the sources all recommend going with a certified guide and proper equipment. Watch for poison ivy in some sections along the banks. The canyon routes around Potrero Redondo are run from about March to September, and spring is the most promoted season for Hidrofobia.
