Mountain 48 km southeast of Arteaga
A mountain resort in the high Sierra de Arteaga with Mexico's year-round artificial ski slope, cabins, and pine-forest trails.
Bosques de Monterreal is a mountain resort deep in the Sierra de Arteaga, set among pine forest at the far end of the road that climbs past San Antonio de las Alazanas toward Mesa de las Tablas. It is famous for one thing above all: a ski slope you can use all year, the first of its kind installed in Mexico.
The slope has no natural snow. It is laid with a synthetic surface kept wet by an irrigation system so that skis slide much as they would on snow, and it is divided into sections for beginners, intermediate, and advanced skiers. Lessons and equipment are available, which makes it a popular first try at skiing for families from Monterrey and Saltillo.
Around the slope the resort has cabins among the trees, a spa, and a long list of other activities, including sledding, horseback rides, ATVs, zip lines, and hiking. In winter the surrounding peaks sometimes get real snow, and the whole sierra fills with visitors hoping to see it.
What to see and do
Ski or take a beginner's lesson on the year-round synthetic slope.
Try sledding, zip lines, or an ATV ride.
Go horseback riding or hiking through the pine forest.
Stay in a cabin and relax at the spa.
Getting there
Monterreal is at kilometer 32 of the road from San Antonio de las Alazanas to Mesa de las Tablas, deep in the sierra southeast of Arteaga; plan on well over an hour from Arteaga and roughly an hour from Saltillo by most estimates. The mountain road is paved but steep and winding, and it can ice up in winter. It is a private resort, so check prices and book activities or cabins in advance.
