Town 33 km southeast of Arteaga
A pine-ringed apple town high in the Sierra de Arteaga, known for its fruit liqueurs, a mummy museum, and a September apple fair.
San Antonio de las Alazanas sits at about 2,180 meters in a valley of the Sierra Madre Oriental, ringed by mountains covered in pine. It is the heart of Arteaga's apple country: orchards of apple and quince fill the valley, and families turn the fruit into liqueurs, jams, and sweets that they sell from their homes and roadside stands.
The town is busiest during the apple harvest in late summer and at the Feria de la Manzana every September, with rodeos, horseback rides, parades of floats, and shows in the town theater. Its other curiosity is a small mummy museum. In recent years the community has added sunflower fields that open on weekends, tractor rides through the crops, and hiking routes of around 18 kilometers through forest and mountain country.
The climate is cool all year and it can snow in winter, so many people come to rent a cabin, light a fireplace, and do very little. San Antonio is also the gateway to the higher sierra, including the ski slope at Bosques de Monterreal and the plateau of Mesa de las Tablas.
