About Playa Majahua

Majahua is the smallest beach on Puerto Marqués bay, in Acapulco's Diamante zone: only about 150 metres of golden sand on the south side of the bay, backed by thick tropical greenery. A pier built on a rocky point separates it from the main Puerto Marqués beach to the north. From that pier you look straight across at the Punta Diamante peninsula, which closes off the mouth of the bay and is still mostly free of hotels and shops.

The surf is very gentle, like that of Caleta, Caletilla and Pichilingue, and the water is usually warm and calm, which makes it a good beach for small children and older people. Besides swimming you can rent a hammock or lounger, go out by kayak or boat, or book a snorkelling trip. In the low season it is almost empty, and in the late afternoon the sun sets over the bay.

A row of rustic seafood restaurants lines the sand, cooking the day's catch: fish ceviche, octopus grilled over coals and fried fish or fish in garlic sauce, with cold beer, coconut water and fresh fruit drinks. Part of the Mexican telenovela Por ella soy Eva was filmed here.

The Puerto Marqués shore has taken a beating from storms: after Tropical Storm John in late September 2024, Majahua and Pichilingue were damaged and closed to visitors because of the danger on the waterfront. Check that the beach and its restaurants are open before you go. Acapulco's international airport is only 15 to 20 minutes away by car, so the beach also works as a first or last stop on a trip.

How to get to Playa Majahua

Majahua is on the south side of Puerto Marqués bay, about 20 minutes and 18 km by road from central Acapulco. By car, follow the Costera Miguel Alemán east and then the Carretera Escénica toward Puerto Marqués; once at the bay, signs point to Majahua. Parking is tight on busy days. From the airport it is 15 to 20 minutes by taxi. On public transport, city buses run to Puerto Marqués and can be flagged anywhere along the Costera (the destination is written on the windscreen), and since August 2025 the Marinabús boat has crossed between the Zócalo and Puerto Marqués: it leaves the Zócalo at 07:00, 09:30, 12:45 and 15:15 and returns at 08:15, 11:00, 14:00 and 16:30, costing 60 pesos for Mexicans and 120 for foreigners. Taxis are unmetered, so agree the fare before you get in. Buses reach Acapulco from Mexico City's Terminal del Sur (Taxqueña), with Estrella de Oro hourly in about five hours, plus Costa Line and ETN, on the Autopista del Sol (95D). The US State Department advises against all travel to Guerrero; travel by day and ask about local conditions before you go.
