About Playa Pichilingue
Pichilingue is the beach on the north shore of Puerto Marqués bay, in Acapulco's Diamante zone. It sits at the foot of the wooded hill of the Pichilingue Diamante development, below the Carretera Escénica, and is one of the bay's three main beaches alongside Puerto Marqués itself, which fills the eastern end where the village is, and little Majahua on the south side. Across the water you look at the El Diamante peninsula, the arm that closes the bay to the south; behind you rises Cerro El Guitarrón, which ends in Punta Bruja.
The sand is a short strip. On it stands the Camino Real Acapulco Diamante hotel, at kilometre 14 of the Escénica, which keeps loungers and umbrellas there; the hillside holds condo towers and little else, so there is not much within walking distance beyond the hotels. The upside is that few people come and it stays quiet.
Being inside the bay, the surf is very gentle and the water clear, good for swimming and snorkelling; in December it sits around 28 °C, among the warmest in Acapulco. Many visitors arrive by sea: boats leave Puerto Marqués and cross the bay in 20 to 25 minutes, then come back for passengers at an agreed time. Palapas, umbrellas and chairs can be rented on the beach.
The bay has taken a beating from storms. In late September 2024 Tropical Storm John flooded the streets of Puerto Marqués, and Pichilingue and Majahua were damaged and closed to visitors because of the danger at the shoreline, barely a year after Hurricane Otis. Check that the beach and the boats are running before you go.
How to get to Playa Pichilingue
Pichilingue is about 20 minutes and 15 km by road from central Acapulco. By car or taxi, follow the Costera Miguel Alemán east and then the Carretera Escénica past Las Brisas toward Puerto Marqués; at kilometre 14 Calle Baja Catita branches off and leads to the hotels and condos on the bay's north shore. The other way in is by boat from Puerto Marqués village: the crossing takes 20 to 25 minutes and the boat comes back for you at the time you agree. Acapulco taxis have no meters, so settle the fare before you get in. Buses run to Acapulco from Mexico City's Terminal del Sur (Taxqueña): Estrella de Oro leaves hourly and takes about five hours, and Costa Line and ETN also run the route. The US government keeps Guerrero at its highest warning level, Do Not Travel; move around by day and ask about local conditions before setting out.
