About Hostotipaquillo

Hostotipaquillo is the seat of a mining municipality in the Valles region of Jalisco, at about 1,300 metres above sea level and some 84 km west of Guadalajara. At the 2020 census it had 3,500 residents, about 40% of the municipality's 8,732. The old name, Ostotipac, is read as "above the cave or crevice", and locals still call the town El Hosto.

The original settlement lay further west, at a place called La Coronilla. Cristóbal de Oñate conquered the region in 1530, and in 1605 the discovery of ore deposits turned it into the Real de Reales de Hostotipaquillo. In the early 17th century it had ten mining haciendas producing more than 150,000 pesos of silver a year, according to the chronicler Arregui, and local women made well-known silver beads. In 1824 it passed to the department of Tequila and by 1825 it had its own council. The municipal motto, "Progress, Tradition and Mining", still recalls that past.

On the plaza stand a bandstand and the parish church, about four hundred years old; the streets keep mansions with shaded patios and wide entrance halls. Around the municipality you can visit the ruins of the Ópalo mine and of a large hacienda where metals were processed, viewpoints such as La Cejita and Cerro del Águila y la Cruz, and archaeological sites such as La Ciendia and Los Arquitos. Chapels include Amajac, Cinco Minas and Santo Domingo de Guzmán. Typical food is goat birria, pozole and peanut sweets.
