Landmark 19 km southeast of Tequila
A family distillery in El Arenal making tequila the traditional way, with brick ovens and a stone tahona; tours by reservation.
Cascahuín is a family-run distillery in El Arenal, a town on the highway between Guadalajara and Tequila, and it has become one of the most respected names among tequila enthusiasts. The Rosales family runs it; their roots in tequila go back to the early 1900s, and the present distillery dates from the 1950s.
What makes a visit special is how much of the work is still done the traditional way. The agave is cooked in brick ovens, crushed with a tahona, a huge stone wheel, and distilled in copper stills, and the tour lets you follow the whole process up close, from the cooked piñas to bottling and labeling, before a tasting of blanco, reposado and añejo.
For travelers who have already seen the big brand distilleries in Tequila, Cascahuín offers a smaller, more hands-on look at how tequila was made before industrial production, and El Arenal sits in the same UNESCO-listed agave landscape.
