    About Nextipac

    Nextipac is a village in the municipality of Zapopan, on the western side of the Guadalajara metropolitan area, at about 1,660 metres above sea level. The name comes from Nahuatl, nextli (ash) and icpac (on top), roughly "on the ash". At the 2020 census it had 4,052 inhabitants, up from 2,365 in 2000.

    Its fame comes from the patronal fiestas of Santo Santiago Apóstol in July. The mañanitas are on the 24th, the patronal mass is on the 25th at noon and at 1 pm the martyrdom of the apostle is performed; the celebrations close on the 27th with the presentation of the new Caballero Representante, who stands for the saint for a year, in a white shirt, a crossed coloured sash and a sword, and takes part in the processions on horseback. Nextipac is known for the tastoanes, dances that symbolically represent indigenous resistance to the conquest.

    In 2026 the fiestas were scheduled for 12 to 27 July, and the Cabalgata por la Fe y la Hermandad on 12 July carried the image of the Virgin of Zapopan alongside that of Santiago, with dancers from Jocotán and Ocotán. Outside those dates it is a quiet village with its plaza, a tile-roofed bandstand and the church, seen in photos hung with ribbons and banners during the fiesta.

    How to get to Nextipac

    Drive from Guadalajara: 30 min, 29 km

    Nextipac is on the western side of Zapopan. From central Zapopan the trip takes about 35 minutes depending on traffic, by car or public transport, along Avenida Juan Gil Preciado (the Tesistán highway) or along Avenida Santa Margarita and Avenida General Ramón Corona. Bus routes reach the delegation directly, although route numbers are not published.

    The village is in the same municipality as Zapopan, on the western side of the Guadalajara metropolitan area. Route schedules are not published.
