About Parque Mirador Independencia

Parque Mirador Independencia sits exactly where Calzada Independencia Norte runs out, in Huentitán El Bajo, Guadalajara's northernmost neighbourhood, about 13 km from the city centre. The avenue that crosses half the city ends here in a row of balconies hanging over the Barranca de Huentitán, also called the Barranca de Oblatos, the canyon of the Río Santiago, which averages about 600 metres deep. From the lookouts you can follow the bed of the Santiago and of its tributary the Río Verde, between slopes of dry tropical forest that turn green in the rainy season and brown in the dry months.

The park was built in the late 1970s to give the people of Guadalajara somewhere to play sport and relax, and it covers more than seven hectares. It has lawns, picnic tables and covered grills, children's play areas, football, basketball, frontón and tennis courts, a running track, a restaurant with a view and an open-air amphitheatre where free films are screened at night. Walkers and runners heading into the canyon often start here.

The canyon has been a protected natural area since 5 June 1997, as an ecological conservation zone in the part that lies within Guadalajara. It holds more than 700 native plant species and more than 80 bird species, and at least 168 plants were first described to science from specimens collected here. Iguanas, squirrels and birds are common around the lookouts. Close by on the same canyon rim are the Guadalajara Zoo, the Selva Mágica amusement park and the University of Guadalajara's art, architecture and design campus. The main lookouts are reached down flights of steps, which makes them hard to reach in a wheelchair.
