The Lakes and Lagoons 5
-
Laguna Superior · Lagoon · Juchitán de Zaragoza
Coastal lagoon of roughly 350 to 380 km² on the Isthmus; Huave and Zapotec fishing, islands and seafood palapas at Playa Vicente. -
Laguna de Manialtepec · Lagoon · San Pedro Mixtepec
A mangrove-lined coastal lagoon 16–18 km west of Puerto Escondido, visited by boat for birdwatching by day and glowing bioluminescent water by night. -
Laguna de Pastoría · Lagoon · Tututepec
The eastern lagoon of Lagunas de Chacahua National Park: 9 km long, with mangroves, bird islets and the boat landing at El Zapotalito. -
Presa Miguel Alemán · Lake · San Pedro Ixcatlán
A 47,800-hectare reservoir on the Río Tonto in Mazatec country: islands that were hilltops, tilapia fishing and boat trips from Temascal or Cerro Quemado. -
Presa Presidente Benito Juárez · Lake · Santa María Jalapa del Marqués
A 1961 reservoir at Jalapa del Marqués that drowned the old town; in droughts its 16th-century Dominican church rises from the water.
