About Pesqueira

Pesqueira began as a stop on the Sonora railway. The line opened from Guaymas to Hermosillo on January 1, 1881, and was then pushed north to Nogales by way of Magdalena, with stations at Zamora, Pesqueira, Carbó, Poza, Querobabi, Puerto, Llano and Santa Ana. The Pesqueira station, named after the man who governed Sonora in 1857, opened in 1904 as a water stop for steam engines and a loading point for cattle and wheat. Cotton for the textile mill at Los Ángeles also came in here by train from Caborca before going on by cart. The first settlers, around 350 people, lived on three or four streets next to the cattle pens and got by on railway jobs and small plots of beans, corn, vegetables and flowers.

In 1934 President Lázaro Cárdenas granted the community an ejido of 3,126 hectares. Land reform and the Abelardo L. Rodríguez dam brought a farming boom in the 1950s, with watermelon, cotton, tomatoes and garlic grown for Hermosillo, and the first farmworkers from Guanajuato, Sinaloa and Chihuahua settled for good. Table grapes changed everything. Jack Frankfurt, an American grower, drilled wells near the El Zanjón river and harvested the first crop in July 1956. The local microclimate makes the vines ripen early, so Sonora's "spring grapes" reach US stores ahead of California's, and the Hermosillo-Pesqueira area now produces 81 percent of the state's table grape exports.

Grapes reshaped the town. Estación Pesqueira had 976 residents in 1980 and 2,354 in 1990; by 2020 it had 9,442, more than the municipal seat, San Miguel de Horcasitas. From the 1980s, labor contractors brought Indigenous workers from Oaxaca and Guerrero, many of whom stayed, and at harvest time the population swells with seasonal workers from nearly every state. Researchers who study the enclave also describe its costs: neighborhoods that grew without basic services, and ejido farmers who ended up leasing their land to large companies.

The town sits at 335 meters in a hot, dry climate. There is no colonial plaza to tour here; what Pesqueira offers is a close look at export agriculture in the Sonoran Desert, with vineyards running right up to the edge of town. The grape harvest runs from early May to the first or second week of July.
