About La Trinidad Chimalpa
La Trinidad Chimalpa is one of the old communities of the municipality of Totolac, at about 2,238 metres above sea level and barely 1.6 km in a straight line from the centre of Tlaxcala city. The name comes from Nahuatl Chimalpan, from chimalli (shield) and pan (on), usually translated as "on the shields"; the Christian part of the name refers to the Holy Trinity, to whom its church is dedicated. At the 2020 census it had 1,132 residents, down from 1,193 in 2010.
The village sits among the former lordships of the Tlaxcallan republic. Less than a kilometre away are Los Reyes Quiahuixtlán to the west and San Francisco Ocotelulco to the south, and Cerro Blanco and Cerro Cuautzi, with the remains of ditches, terraces and pre-Hispanic walls of the area, are 21 and 36 minutes on foot, by PueblosAmérica's estimate.
Its stone church, with two towers, is the focus of village life and is classed as a historic monument. The patron-saint fiesta is held in June; in 2025 it fell on Sunday 15 and Monday 16. That year, after four years without fireworks, the custom was revived and on the second night fireworks stored in a 19th-century catechism hall attached to the church exploded and the hall collapsed, with no serious injuries; INAH staff inspected the site to plan its restoration.

Drive from Chiautempan: 10 min, 12 km
La Trinidad Chimalpa is in the municipality of Totolac, about 1.5 km from the seat San Juan Totolac and about 1.6 km from downtown Tlaxcala, so from the capital it is a few minutes by car, taxi or ride-hail. From the Tlaxcala bus terminal (on Boulevard Tepehitec) the distance is short and a taxi is the practical choice. There are no published combi routes stopping in Chimalpa; Totolac's shared vans mainly serve San Juan Totolac and neighbouring villages. From Puebla (CAPU) it is about 35 min by car, approx., on the highway toward Tlaxcala, and Huejotzingo, the nearest Pueblo Mágico, is about 40 km and 34 min away.
