About La Trinidad Tepehitec
La Trinidad Tepehitec is a community in the municipality of Tlaxcala, about 3 km south of the capital's centre at 2,220 metres, close to the city's central bus terminal, which stands on the road to Tepehitec. INEGI lists it by its official name, Pueblo Heroico de la Trinidad Tepehitec, with 3,254 people at the 2020 census. According to its community president, it was founded by the Sánchez and Aguilar families, who still keep its customs going.
The town council of Tlaxcala gave it the title of Heroic Town in 2010, at the community's request and with the support of local historian Jaime Sánchez Sánchez, who wrote a book on the Tepehitec anti-reelectionists. In the early 20th century, under Próspero Cahuantzi's Porfirian state government, an anti-reelection club led by Manuel Sánchez met here, in touch with the Serdán brothers in Puebla, like Juan Cuamatzi's club in Contla. On 24 April 1910 delegates from the clubs of Tlaxcala, Cholula and Atlixco met in Tepehitec and swore before the flag to rise in arms; Cuamatzi was named leader and the date set for late May, but the authorities discovered the plan and arrested him. In November 1914 the area was again a battlefield, between Carrancista forces and Domingo Arenas's Zapatista troops. On the Revolution anniversary in 2019 the town held a ceremony honouring those who took part in it and in the Reform War.
Town life centres on the yellow church of the Trinity, with its bell tower and tiled dome, surrounded by its cemetery with the hill behind. The patronal feast of the Holy Trinity is movable and falls in late May or June; in 2024 it was held over the weekend of 25–26 May. The busiest night, though, is the Day of the Dead: the cemetery is cleaned and decorated, families keep vigil at the graves with candles, marigolds and their loved ones' favourite food, brass bands and mariachis play, and the community hands out tamales and coffee; about a thousand people came in 2025. Local authorities reckon the tradition is over a century old, and there is a grave-decorating contest with prizes of up to 5,000 pesos.
