About La Aurora

La Aurora is a locality in the municipality of Tepeyanco, in south-central Tlaxcala, at about 2,277 metres above sea level and a few kilometres from the seat. The 2020 census counted 1,402 people, up from 1,192 in 2010 and 895 in 2005, making it the fourth-largest of the municipality's 14 localities; it then had 316 inhabited dwellings. The Enciclopedia de los Municipios lists it as one of the barrios that depend on Tepeyanco, along with Las Águilas and Guerrero, and places it in the municipality's semi-flat zone, with streams that only run in the rainy season.

La Aurora shares Tepeyanco's history as a Franciscan convent-garden: the former convent of San Francisco was built in 1554, and the church, cloister and cells in 1558. Farming remains alive around it, with maize, beans, vegetables and fruit, plus the avocado known nationally as the Tepeyanco variety. Other residents work in the factories of the Xiloxoxtla, Chiautempan and Puebla industrial corridor.

In the nearby hills, a few kilometres to the west and southwest, rise the cerros Zompilteca (2,361 m), Santa Bárbara (2,364 m) and El Calvario (2,276 m); Tepeyanco has a Calvario chapel. Tepeyanco's big feast is San Francisco de Asís on 4 October, with a Moors-and-Christians dance, mañanitas with mariachi and brass band, and a popular fair dance; at carnival the municipality's huehues wear hand-made capes and embroidery.
