About Santiago Tlacochcalco

Santiago Tlacochcalco is a village in the municipality of Tepeyanco, at roughly 2,280 metres above sea level and 2.9 km northeast of the municipal seat as the crow flies. Its name comes from Nahuatl: tlacoxtli (arrow), calli (house) and the locative ending -co, usually rendered as "in the house of the arrows". The saint in the name is Santiago el Mayor (St James the Greater), the village's patron.

The 2020 census counted 1,159 people, the fifth-largest of the municipality's 14 localities. The historical figures show slow growth: 246 people in 1900, 486 in 1930, 799 in 1990 and 1,082 in 2010. Nearly every home has electricity and piped water, and about six in ten have a car. Santa Isabel Xiloxoxtla (a little over 1 km south), La Aurora (1.4 km east) and Santa María Acuitlapilco (1.65 km northwest) are all close, so the village sits within a built-up area while keeping its own centre.

Part of the Acuitlapilco lagoon lies within Tlacochcalco's territory, and Tepeyanco's own municipal profile notes that the municipality owns half of the lagoon through this community. From Santa María Acuitlapilco, across the water, the church of Santiago Apóstol stands out with its yellow-and-white tower and white dome, the village's visual landmark. The patron-saint fiesta is held on 25 July and appears in Tlaxcala's summer calendar of mole festivals.
