About San Cosme Atlamaxac
San Cosme Atlamaxac is a locality in the municipality of Tepeyanco, in southern Tlaxcala, at about 2,240 metres above sea level and about 9 km from the state capital. It sits almost against the municipal seat: Wikipedia puts it 900 m from Tepeyanco, and population maps give 1.2 km in a straight line to the southeast. Its postal code is 90180 and its telephone code 246; the name is of Nahuatl origin and carries that of Saint Cosmas, a patron he shares with Saint Damian.
Its population has grown steadily: it had 471 residents in 1940, 1,032 in 1980, 1,854 in 2000 and 2,364 in 2010, and at the 2020 census 3,019 (1,572 women and 1,447 men) in 710 occupied dwellings. Almost every home has electricity and piped water, and homes with internet rose from about 10% in 2010 to nearly 75% in 2020.
Its immediate neighbours are El Carmen Aztama (1.2 km), San Pedro Xalcaltzinco (1.5 km) and Colonia Las Águilas. The El Calvario hill (2,276 m) and Cerro Santa Bárbara (2,364 m) rise 1.4 to 2.3 km away. From the Calvario chapel on the hill above Tepeyanco the valley opens out toward La Malinche and Cerro Cuatlapanga. In the seat, a few minutes away, stands the parish of San Francisco de Asís, with the Franciscan former convent begun in October 1554.
