About Acxotla del Monte
Acxotla del Monte, or Santa María Acxotla del Monte, is one of the three localities of the municipality of Teolocholco, along with the seat, San Luis Teolocholco, and El Carmen Aztama. It stands at about 2,415 metres on the slope of La Malinche, about 3 km in a straight line east of Teolocholco. At the 2020 census it had 2,620 inhabitants, up from 2,136 in 2010. The name comes from Nahuatl and is explained as the place where firs abound.
In the imperial period it appears written as Axcotla del Monte among the villages of the Tlaxcala district, which included Teolocholco, Acuamanala and El Carmen Aztama. Its church is dedicated to the Virgen del Pilar, who gives the village fair its name: in October 2026 the community fair opened with mañanitas to the Virgin, with mariachi and flowers for her image, plus live music and Civil Protection checks of the food stalls.
The village's ritual life also turns on the municipal carnival. The Acxotla del Monte camada is part of the San Luis Teolocholco carnival programme; in 2026 it performed on 20 March. The huehues wear hand-embroidered cloth and a feathered hat and dance cuadrillas with a wind band. In the municipality the food includes turkey mole, carnitas, barbacoa, tlacoyos and chilacayote, preserves of capulín, pear, peach and tejocote, and natural pulque, and on Day of the Dead families take offerings to the cemetery from 28 October to 2 November.
How to get to Acxotla del Monte
Drive from Chiautempan: 15 min, 11 km
Acxotla del Monte is about 3 km in a straight line east of San Luis Teolocholco and under 1 km from San Francisco Tetlanohcan, on the slope of La Malinche. From Tlaxcala city take the road up towards Teolocholco and continue east to the village. From Puebla it is about 25 minutes by car, and from Cholula about 34 km and 42 minutes. There are no hotels in the village; the nearest are 2 to 4 km away, near Teolocholco and Tetlanohcan. Residents mention poor public transport and there are no published schedules, so a combi towards Teolocholco or a taxi from Tlaxcala or Apizaco is the practical option.
