About San Bartolomé Cuahuixmatlac

San Bartolomé Cuahuixmatlac is the second-largest locality in the municipality of Chiautempan after the seat, Santa Ana Chiautempan, with 4,447 inhabitants in the 2020 census. It sits on the flank of La Malinche at about 2,400 metres, with San Pedro Xochiteotla to the north, San Pedro Tlalcualpan to the south and Chiautempan to the west. People here work the land and, above all, in the textile industry.

According to local tradition, Tlaxcalans founded the town in 1380, and a group that left from here settled the lowlands by the rivers where Chiautempan grew. The chronicles say a temple to the water deity Matlalcueye stood on the site (other authors link it to the goddess Toci); Fray Martín de Valencia tore it down and put up an image of San Bartolomé. Hence the church is billed as the "First Hermitage of the Americas", around 1524. Inside are a small museum of pre-Hispanic and colonial history, an image of San Bartolomé said to have been brought from Spain with indigenous craftsmanship, bells made from Apizaco railway rail and a Sacred Heart altar. The modern parish holds a replica of Our Lady of Ocotlán.

The feast is 24 August, with turkey mole offered by the mayordomía; the following Sunday the fiscalía hosts the neighbouring villages. The fair is called the Walnut Fair because nearly every house has walnut trees and the Castilian walnut is harvested around those dates; in 2014, its 38th edition, it ran 17 to 31 August with horse races, a bull-ring event and a balloon show. There is also a carnival with cuadrillas and huehues in four groups.
