About Amaxac de Guerrero
Amaxac de Guerrero is the seat of the municipality of the same name, about 9 km east of Tlaxcala city and at roughly 2,300 metres. Amaxac comes from Nahuatl and is read as "where the water forks"; the surname Guerrero, for Vicente Guerrero, was added in 1982. At the 2020 census the locality had 10,417 people. Between 1100 and 1519 its settlements depended on the lordship of Tizatlán; the town was founded on 8 March 1521 under a land grant from Hernán Cortés requested by the leaders of Metecatlán, and the municipality was created in 1902.
The 19th century turned it into a mill town. The Santa Elena spinning mill was founded in 1888 by Quintín Gómez Conde Hermanos and passed to Miranda Hermanos in 1913; La Estrella, by Agustín del Pozo, had similar but smaller facilities and was burned in the 1911 fighting. That is why the municipality belongs to the Los Textiles y el Centro tourist route.
The parish of San Bernabé, from the 17th century, has a Latin-cross plan and a yellow front; above a quarry-stone arch is the saint's image, between Doric pilasters. Its fiesta is 11 June and begins nine days earlier with the novena, morning masses and evening rosaries; the June fair adds horse races, cockfights, fireworks, bands and sports events. At carnival, groups of 25 to 30 couples dressed as catrines with black umbrellas dance, and repeat it eight days later, in "la octava". Local craftsmen carve walking sticks and carnival masks and work black stone, brick and adobe.
