About San Miguel Contla
San Miguel Contla is a locality in Santa Cruz Tlaxcala municipality, about 2 km south of the municipal seat, on the slopes of La Malinche. It stands at roughly 2,350 metres above sea level and, at the 2020 census, had 9,556 people in 2,701 homes, more than Santa Cruz Tlaxcala itself, the municipal seat, which counted 5,845. Contla is a Nahuatl word usually translated as "place of pots".
It should not be confused with another San Miguel Contla in the Puebla municipality of San Salvador el Verde, a hamlet of 21 people: the Tlaxcala one is the large village, with INEGI code 290260005.
The centre is the church of San Miguel Contla, a peach-coloured building with a multi-stage bell tower, a clock on a square tower and a paved atrium. INEGI figures describe a fairly urbanised place: 99% of homes have piped water and electricity, half of households have internet, average schooling is 10.5 years and only 1.3% of residents speak an indigenous language. About 47% of people aged 12 and over were employed in 2020 and 43% of homes had a car.
