About San Luis Apizaquito
San Luis Apizaquito is about 2 km from the city of Apizaco and belongs to the Tlaxcala-Apizaco metropolitan area. It is a community presidency of the municipality of Apizaco and, with 7,234 people at the 2020 census, the fourth-largest locality in the municipality. Its history explains the name of the neighbouring city: according to a UNAM thesis citing chronicler Luis Nava, the village of San Luis Apizaco was founded in 1543 and took San Luis as its patron saint; when railway engineers arrived, they named their work camp after the nearest settlement, and over time the village became the diminutive, Apizaquito, while the camp kept the name Apizaco.
The feast of San Luis is held on 25 August. The church keeps a gilded multi-tier altarpiece with paintings of saints and an image of the Virgin and Child in the central niche. A spring-fed dam, the presa El Ojito, is being rescued by the community: its first two stages removed more than 500 tonnes of rubbish, mud and invasive plants and added a dock. The town also has a Centro de las Artes.
The community presidency is on calle Ángel Solana and receives residents on Monday mornings. Today the village almost touches Apizaco's built-up area, so daily life here is that of a city neighbourhood with its own church and fiesta.
