About San Juan Quetzalcoapan

San Juan Quetzalcoapan is a locality in the municipality of Tzompantepec, at 2,512 metres above sea level in the La Malinche region. The name combines its patron saint, John the Baptist, with a Nahuatl word read as "place of the god Quetzalcoatl". The 2020 census counted 1,354 residents, the third-largest locality in the municipality after San Andrés Ahuashuatepec and the seat itself; in 1900 there were only 290 and in 1960, 633.

Its main monument is the church of San Juan, described by INEGI as an 18th-century work. It has a Latin-cross plan, stone walls 90 centimetres thick, a stone cross-vaulted roof, a round-arched door with a window above it that lights the choir, a niche high on the facade and a Latin cross of lime mortar at the top. In the photo on the page you can see the stone tower, the atrium with its white wall and, behind, one of the mountains of the valley.

The village fiesta is on 24 June, the day of St John the Baptist, and in 2026 the town government presented the poster of the Gran Feria San Juan Quetzalcoapan, with music, recreational activities and family gatherings. The municipality makes burnished clay, fired red clay, engraved jars and the typical clay comales; among local dishes INEGI lists maguey worms, mushroom soup, broad-bean broth and mutton barbacoa in mixiote.
