About Tocatlán

Tocatlán, also called Santa María Tocatlán, is the seat of a municipality in eastern Tlaxcala at about 2,559 metres above sea level. At the 2020 census it had 6,230 inhabitants. The name is Nahuatl and means place of spiders. For centuries it was a dependent village: in 1623 it belonged to the Franciscan doctrine of Texcalac, later to the municipality of Tzompantepec, and from 25 November 1873 to Xaloztoc, until a 1952 decree made it a municipality in its own right.

The 18th-century church of Santa María has a Latin-cross plan and keeps an atrium-cemetery with gravestones and a ciprés holding the image of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción; the ciprés was begun on 7 May 1884 and finished on 6 August that year. The fiesta is on 13 August and opens on the 12th with the traditional carrera de la rosa. At carnival the camadas dance house to house from noon to 7 p.m. to tropical music, and the closing is on Tuesday at the basketball court.

Local craftwork uses natural fibres: basketry in huejote, willow, sotol, romerillo and reed, including chiquihuites and sotol-palm petacas. On the table, pollo a la Tocatlán, pipián rojo and maguey worms stand out. On the outskirts stand the walls of the ex-hacienda Acocotla.
