About San Pedro Tlacotepec
San Pedro Tlacotepec is a locality in the municipality of Xaloztoc, in eastern Tlaxcala, which local accounts count among the oldest settlements of the area: tradition dates it to the 16th century and says its residents founded the present-day Xaloztoc. It had 4,202 inhabitants at the 2020 census, making it the second most populous community in the municipality after the seat, San Cosme Xaloztoc. The name is Nahuatl; the Tlacotepec glyph appears in the Codex Mendoza and is read through the word tlacotl, the shoots used to make arrow shafts.
The story told in the village centres on Bartolomé Mazatlchichimecatecuhtli, lord of San Pedro Tlacotepec, who is credited with a coat of arms granted by Charles V on the basis of the Lienzo-Códice of 1535. The arms hang in the municipal palace and in the community's auxiliary presidency, and are part of Xaloztoc's Centenary Shield. In 1919 the community also received a communal land grant of 322 hectares taken from neighbouring haciendas.
The old church of San Pedro, with its blue facade, gilded arch and white bell tower, is the most visible building in the village. The patron saint is Saint Peter the Apostle and the religious ceremony is always held on 29 June. The village fair, the only one of the year, runs from late June to early August; its civic festivities last a week and peak with a Sunday fireworks display, with mariachi groups and carnival huehue troupes invited, as is customary in Xaloztoc's communities.
