About Zacazontetla

Santa Cruz Zacatzontetla, also spelled Zacazontetla on maps and locality lists, is a community in the municipality of Xaloztoc in eastern Tlaxcala, at about 2,558 metres above sea level. At the 2020 census it had 828 residents (431 men and 397 women), and nearly every home had electricity and piped water. It spreads over roughly ten blocks, and its fields are green in the rainy season and fairly dry through the hot summer.

It sits right against the built-up area of Xaloztoc: the municipal seat, with 11,838 people in 2020, is about 1.5 km away in a straight line, San Pedro Tlacotepec lies under 1 km to the north and Tocatlán a little over 1 km to the southeast. The community has its own technical secondary school (No. 41), the Benito Juárez federal rural primary school, the Xilozochilt kindergarten and a semi-professional football pitch.

Its big day is 3 May, the Holy Cross fiesta that gives the village its name, when the fair is held in honour of the cross. The rest of the municipality keeps its own calendar: Saints Cosmas and Damian on 26 September in the seat, Saint Peter on 29 June in Tlacotepec, and a February carnival with huehues dancers. Before the Conquest Xaloztoc belonged to the lordship of Tizatlán, in colonial times it was a visita of the Huamantla convent, and it became a municipality on 25 November 1873; its Nahuatl name is translated as "in the sand cave".
