About Velazco

Velazco is a colonia in the municipality of Xaloztoc, in eastern Tlaxcala, at roughly 2,490 metres above sea level. Its founding date is on record: 11 October 1948. It is one of the youngest settlements in the area and the census shows its growth: 101 people in 1950, 226 in 1970, 512 in 1990, 858 in 2010 and 1,015 at the 2020 census, which puts it among the five most populous localities in the municipality. The municipal description lists it, together with the colonia José López Portillo, as one of those farthest from the main population centre.

The seat, San Cosme Xaloztoc, is about 4.6 km away, and neighbouring localities include Guadalupe Texmolac (about 3.5 km north), colonia José López Portillo (about 4 km) and Santa Cruz Zacatzontetla. The land is open plain with low hills, a temperate climate with summer rain, and small peaks such as Quimicho (2,739 m) nearby. Velazco has no hotels; the closest ones are on the Apizaco side.

No patron-saint festival is published for the colonia. For the area's celebrations, the municipal fair of Xaloztoc is held on 26 September for Saints Cosmas and Damian, known as the Feria del Mariachi, with fireworks on the first Sunday afterwards. Pyrotechnics and costumes for dancers are the municipality's best-known crafts.
