Capulac

Capulac is a locality in the municipality of Tetla de la Solidaridad, in northern Tlaxcala, at about 2,585 metres above sea level. It is the fourth-largest in the municipality, after Tetla, San Francisco Atexcatzinco and San Bartolomé Matlalohcan: at the 2020 census it had 1,510 inhabitants (744 women and 766 men), against 1,373 in 2010 and 667 in 1980. Its population more than doubled in four decades, and in 1910 it had only 208 people.

The name comes from Nahuatl: capulín, the small dark-fruited tree that grows at these altitudes, plus the suffix for abundance, so it reads as "place where capulines are plentiful".

The village is ringed by hills and peaks. Within 3 km are Cerro El Fraile (2,837 m, to the northwest), Cerro El Oro (2,731 m, to the southwest) and Cerro La Patada (2,814 m, to the northeast). The nearest neighbours are Santa Fe la Troje, 1.6 km south with 451 inhabitants, and José María Morelos y Pavón, about 4.7 km east. In 2019 the municipal government set aside 200 thousand pesos to build a chapel in the community.

Almost every home has electricity and piped water, but only about one in five has internet. It works as a starting point for exploring the communities of the north of the municipality.
