About Tetla de la Solidaridad

Tetla de la Solidaridad, also known as Santiago Tetla, is the seat of the municipality of the same name in north-central Tlaxcala, at about 2,445 m, between Apizaco and Tlaxco. The 2020 census counted 17,480 people. The name comes from Nahuatl tetl, stone, and means "stony place", which makes sense once you see the pedregal de Tetla: a lava badland left by a pyroclastic flow from the Coaxapo volcano, with soil so thin it was never farmed and still carries its original juniper, pine and oak forest. Because the trees grow no taller than about six metres, locals call it the "bosque enano de Tetla", Tetla's dwarf forest.

A fluted projectile point found in the municipality in 1972 points to hunter-gatherers here about 12,000 years ago; later the Teotihuacan culture occupied sites such as Las Peñitas at San Mateo Piedras Negras and Chimalpa on San Bartolo hill, and before the Conquest the local Otomí were subject to the lordship of Tliliuhquitepec. In colonial times the land was divided among haciendas. San Mateo Piedras Negras, established in its present form in 1874, keeps an 18th-century chapel and is regarded as the pioneer and emblem of fighting-bull breeding in Tlaxcala; Ahuatepec and Cuaxamalucan were 19th-century farming and pulque estates. In June 1914 some 200 revolutionaries tried to take the town.

The church of Santiago has a pink cantera façade with red petatillo decoration, a trefoil arch and a mixtilinear choir window; its tower carries saints in high relief and a half-orange dome. Inside are an old organ in the choir loft, paintings of the life of Christ, the Virgin and Purgatory, and a Neoclassical altarpiece. The 17th-century chapel of San Francisco has an atrium arch inscribed "Alabado sea del 1674 año". Since the Ciudad Industrial Xicohténcatl was built, with paper, textile and plastics plants, Tetla has been one of the state's industrial hubs, yet its craftspeople still carve molcajetes, metates, crosses and troughs from stone and make reed goods and papel picado.

The feast of St James is on 25 July, preceded by a nine-day novena of morning masses and evening rosaries paid for by the merchants', workers' and builders' guilds. On Carnival Tuesday the dance troupes gather from 9 am in the main plaza to dance quadrilles in frock coats, top hats, umbrellas and carved wooden masks, finishing around 9 pm with a public dance.
