About San Lorenzo Tlacualoyan

San Lorenzo Tlacualoyan is a locality of the municipality of Yauhquemehcan, about 2.4 km southwest of the seat, San Dionisio Yauhquemehcan, and less than 1 km from Santa Úrsula Zimatepec and San Benito Xaltocan. It had 949 inhabitants at the 2020 census (742 in 2010) and sits at about 2,413 m above sea level. Its Nahuatl name has been read as "where one eats well", for the tlacualeras who cooked and carried food to men working in the fields, or alternatively for the abundance of opossums (tlacuaches).

The municipal chronicler David Chamorro Zarco suggests San Lorenzo was adopted as patron in the second half of the 16th century, during the Franciscan founding of towns in Tlaxcala. The present church was begun around the late 17th century and took decades to finish; its neoclassical look dates from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It holds two images of the saint, one in the main altarpiece and one on a processional litter that tours the community and neighbouring villages, plus a Christ scourged at the column and the Padre Jesús who walks in Holy Week. A fiscal, a mayordomo, a sacristan and a bell-ringer look after the church.

The fiesta is on 10 August, with a novena from the 1st. On the night of 9-10 August the bell-ringers, mostly young people, peal the three large bells of the lower tower and the small esquila of the upper tower until dawn; then come the mañanitas, with mariachi or a wind band, mass, flowers for the saint, rides, a tienta de vaquillas and dancing. Elders remember that in the mid-20th century the community owned two iron cámaras, fired with gunpowder to make a loud blast.
