About San Francisco Tlacuilohcan

San Francisco Tlacuilohcan is a village in the municipality of Yauhquemehcan, in central Tlaxcala, at about 2,436 metres above sea level. Tlacuilohcan is a Nahuatl word translated as "place of scribes", and St Francis of Assisi is its patron. Spanish Wikipedia gives it 2,269 inhabitants in the 2020 census, so it is a small village a few kilometres from San Dionisio Yauhquemehcan, the municipal seat.

Its main monument is the church of San Francisco on the village plaza. INAFED dates it to 1787 and describes a Latin-cross plan, a plastered facade, stone walls and vault about 80 centimetres thick, a round-arched door with a choir window and a single three-storey tower topped by a dome, lantern and a mortar cross. The parish house is attached to the church.

Tlacuilohcan has its own huehue camada: the best-known photograph of the village on Wikimedia Commons shows it dancing at the 2017 Tlaxcala Carnival, in feathered headdresses of many colours and masks with Spanish features. In the municipality carnival runs on the Sunday, Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday; camadas dance French quadrilles in front of the municipal palace and each barrio holds its closing remate on Tuesday night. A travel columnist looking for camadas in 2019 toured the village along with Santa Cruz Tlaxcala and Rosario Ocotoxco, where huehues danced in public squares and in private homes.
