About Belén Atzitzimititlán
Belén Atzitzimititlán is the second-largest locality in the municipality of Apetatitlán de Antonio Carvajal, about 1.8 km from the municipal seat and at 2,309 metres above sea level. At the 2020 census it had 3,962 inhabitants, up from 3,232 in 2010 and 2,356 in 2000; around 1900 it had barely over 400 people, so nearly all of its growth is recent. Within the municipality only Apetatitlán itself (4,161) is bigger.
The name is Nahuatl and is usually read as "place of the water spirits": atl, water, and tzitzimitl, a supernatural figure some interpret as a ghost of the fields, plus -tlan, place. The municipality it belongs to had a lagoon until the early 20th century, and its own name is explained as "place of mats over the water".
The village landmark is the church of Belén, with a light-blue-and-white bell tower, a clock and a facade of white plasterwork over cut stone, topped by a shell-shaped niche. A short walk from the centre is the presidencia auxiliar, the community's government building, decorated with murals.
Belén runs into neighbouring villages of the same valley: San Matías Tepetomatitlán is about 600 m to the west, Tecolotla 1.2 km to the east, Tlatempan a little over 2 km to the northeast and Amaxac de Guerrero about 2.3 km to the south. About 3 km to the west rises the Loma San Matías, at 2,394 m.
