About San Esteban Tizatlán
San Esteban Tizatlán is a town in the municipality of Tlaxcala, on a low hill about 4 km northeast of the state capital's centre, with 6,965 people at the 2020 census. Its Nahuatl name means "place of chalk", after the white earth that was dug from its hills until a few decades ago.
Before the Conquest it was one of the four seats of the Tlaxcallan republic, alongside Tepeticpac, Ocotelulco and Quiahuixtlan. Chronicles say it was founded by a group that left Ocotelulco after a power struggle, sheltering first at Teotlalpan before settling on this hill. Xicohténcatl the Elder ruled from here, and in September 1519 Hernán Cortés was lodged in the lord's palaces while the alliance with the Spanish was agreed. His son Xicohténcatl Axayacatzin, captain of the Tlaxcalan army, opposed that alliance and was eventually hanged at Texcoco; two statues of him stand beside the archaeological site.
The heart of the town is a single complex: the pre-Hispanic platform, a 16th-century Franciscan open chapel, and the 19th-century church of San Esteban, built right against the front of the chapel. The polychrome altars, uncovered in 1927 when villagers dug for a promised treasure, carry Postclassic paintings now read as the setting for the investiture of tecuhtli lords. The chapel keeps murals from around 1550, among them a Baptism of Christ with Indigenous glyphs painted between the figures, and musician angels on the triumphal arch.
Tizatlán is also a woodcarvers' town, making painted walking sticks, staffs of office bearing the arms of the four lordships, teponaztli drums and figures; families such as the Molinas are on their third generation of carvers. Every 26 December it honours St Stephen with the Feria del Bastón y del Pipián, serving green pumpkin-seed pipián, once made with duck. At carnival the barrio dance troupes, such as Cuahuatzala's, come out in velvet costumes embroidered with beads, Spanish-featured masks and feathered headdresses.
