About San Juan Totolac
San Juan Totolac is the seat of the municipality of Totolac, about 3 km northwest of Tlaxcala city, on the slope of a hill. It had 7,584 inhabitants at the 2020 census. The name is Nahuatl and is usually translated as "place of water birds". Before the conquest this area belonged to the lordship of Ocotelulco, one of the four that made up the old republic of Tlaxcallan, whose lord Maxixcatzin was the senior ruler when Cortés arrived.
Franciscan friars founded an Indian chapel here in 1550 dedicated to the Virgen de las Nieves. Floods of the Zahuapan river wore the original site away and the town moved to higher ground, where the parish of San Juan Bautista was built: work began in 1711 and it opened for worship on 25 November 1714. Inside is the original image of the Virgen de las Nieves from the old visita. Ruins of that Franciscan visita, including a bell tower, still stand beside the road to Texmelucan; the state government consolidated them with INAH advice in 1978. On 6 July 1591 about 400 Tlaxcalan families left from here to settle the north of New Spain, and they are honoured every 6 July.
The town is best known for its pan de fiesta, baked mostly on Thursdays in family bakeries and handed out at the patron festival in January. In 2021 a local chronicler estimated that around half the population lived from baking it. The streets are cobbled, the houses single-storey with sloping roofs, and the parish sits at the highest point of the town.
How to get to San Juan Totolac
Drive from Chiautempan: 15 min, 13 km
San Juan Totolac is about 3 km northwest of Tlaxcala city on the Tlaxcala–San Martín Texmelucan road, so from central Tlaxcala it is roughly a 10-minute drive. Local colectivos run the stretch, but there is no published route with stops and schedules: the easiest way is to ask in downtown Tlaxcala or at the city's bus terminal. From Puebla (CAPU) you reach Tlaxcala first and continue from there. The parish sits at the top of the town, so streets climb steeply; the festival bread is baked on Thursdays and sold mostly at weekends. Huejotzingo, the nearest Pueblo Mágico, is about 38 km away (approx. 40 minutes by car).
