San Francisco Temetzontla

San Francisco Temetzontla is a locality in the municipality of Panotla, in the northern part of its territory, about 4.6 km northwest of the municipal seat and at roughly 2,570 m above sea level. The name is Nahuatl, glossed on Spanish Wikipedia as "place where lead is abundant", and the patron saint is Saint Francis of Assisi. The 2020 census counted 2,490 people here, against 368 in 1900 and 1,199 in 1970, which makes it one of the four largest localities in the municipality alongside Panotla, San Jorge Tezoquipan and San Tadeo Huiloapan.

The village is dominated by its church of San Francisco de Asís, built in the 18th century. The facade has two levels and the top of the portal is framed by a shell shape; the bell tower has three levels and carries a clock. From the street you also see a smaller second tower and a dome covered in green tile behind the church's stone walls.

The surroundings are low hills: Cerro Celica (2,542 m, 1.5 km to the southeast), Tepozo (2,422 m) and Hueyactepec (2,381 m) are close by. The nearest neighbours are Santa Catalina Apatlahco, Jesús Acatitla and Santa Cruz Techachalco. The climate is temperate highland, about 13 °C on average through the year with some 734 mm of rain and September as the wettest month. Local historical notes record that the municipality of Panotla was re-established in 1882 with Temetzontla among its villages, after separating from Tlaxcala.
