About Santa Cruz Techachalco
Santa Cruz Techachalco is a locality in the municipality of Panotla, at about 2,239 metres above sea level, with 2,167 people at the 2020 census. It is the fifth-largest in the municipality, after Panotla, San Jorge Tezoquipan, San Tadeo Huiloapan and San Francisco Temetzontla. The name joins the dedication to the Holy Cross of Christ with the Nahuatl Techachalco, interpreted as "on the stony sandy ground".
The population has moved up and down: 164 people in 1900, 631 in 1960, 1,982 in 1990, 1,797 in 2000 and 2,095 in 2010. In 2023 Governor Lorena Cuéllar inaugurated the rehabilitation of 1.46 km of the access road to Santa Cruz Techachalco and the landfill, with sidewalks, kerbs and a new asphalt layer, a project of more than 5 million pesos; the report mentions the Miguel Hidalgo primary school and the community president, Domingo Flores Ortega.
Like the rest of Panotla it shares the municipality's festivals: carnival with huehues and carved masks, the national paper-balloon festival, and the feasts of Saint Nicholas of Bari on 6 December and the third Sunday of that month in the seat.

Drive from San Martín Texmelucan: 15 min, 16 km
Santa Cruz Techachalco is in the municipality of Panotla, about 4 km west of Tlaxcala city and about 33 km (roughly 40 minutes by car) from Puebla; the nearest pueblo in the region is Huejotzingo, about 22 km away (roughly 25 minutes). From Tlaxcala, take the road to Panotla and from there the access road to Santa Cruz Techachalco, a 1.46 km stretch rehabilitated in 2023 that continues to the landfill. By public transport, start at Tlaxcala's bus terminal, get to Panotla and ask there for local transport to Techachalco. There are no published schedules.
