About San Jorge Tezoquipan
San Jorge Tezoquipan is the second-largest locality in the municipality of Panotla after the seat itself: the 2020 census counted 4,881 people, up from 542 in 1900. It lies at about 2,214 metres above sea level, in the Puebla-Tlaxcala valley just west of Tlaxcala city. The name joins the patron saint, Saint George, to the Nahuatl Tezoquipan, made of tetl (stone), zoquitl (mud) and pan (on), usually rendered "on the rocky mud".
The municipal encyclopedia cited on Wikipedia links Tezoquipan to the Preclassic Tezoquipan phase, roughly 350 BC to AD 100, and mentions an archaeological area here. A parish-archive inventory published by ADABI calls it one of the most representative zones of Panotla's pre-Hispanic period. From the colonial era there is the church of San Jorge, a whitewashed building with blue domes and a bell tower, which a local report of October 2017 lists among Tlaxcala churches with minor damage from the 19 September earthquake.
Tezoquipan shares the rest of Panotla's calendar: carnival with carved and painted masks and costumes, and the national paper-balloon festival held in the municipality. The seat, with its Baroque parish of San Nicolás de Bari, is a few kilometres away.
