About San Vicente Xiloxochitla
San Vicente Xiloxochitla is a community in the municipality of Natívitas, in south-western Tlaxcala, with 2,796 inhabitants at the 2020 census. It is one of the twelve auxiliary municipal presidencies of Natívitas and one of five whose head is chosen by customary practice. It stands at about 2,200 metres above sea level and borders Santa Ana Nopalucan and San Damián Texoloc.
It is known as the cradle, or capital, of the taco de canasta: in the most repeated account, the basket taco as sold today was born here around the 1950s, when several families began making warm, easy-to-carry tacos to sell in Mexico City and neighbouring states. A gazette of the Chamber of Deputies, cited by the press, says 80% of the village's families live from the trade. Traditional fillings are potato, beans, adobo and chicharrón; the tacos are stacked in a paper-lined basket and left to rest about twenty minutes so the steam softens them, and they are sold mostly from bicycles with baskets.
The Feria del Taco de Canasta is held every first Sunday of December, since 2007 according to México Desconocido, with free tacos handed out and thousands of visitors. The village also has its carnival, with dancers such as the huehue, and its parish church, with a bell tower topped by a yellow dome and red trim. The archaeological site of Cacaxtla, one of two in the municipality of Natívitas along with Xochitécatl, lies in the same municipality.
How to get to San Vicente Xiloxochitla
Drive from San Martín Texmelucan: 20 min, 18 km
San Vicente Xiloxochitla is in south-western Tlaxcala, in the municipality of Natívitas, right next to Santa Ana Nopalucan. From Puebla city it is about 29 km (about 35 minutes by car) and from Huejotzingo, the nearest Pueblo Mágico, about 17 km (about 20 minutes). From Tlaxcala city you go through the Natívitas and Nopalucan area and then along local roads to the village centre. The usual starting points are the Tlaxcala bus terminal or CAPU in Puebla; there are no published schedules for a direct route. For the first-Sunday-of-December fair, arrive early, since the village receives thousands of visitors.
