About San Bernabé Capula

San Bernabé Capula is a village in the municipality of Natívitas, in southwest Tlaxcala, at about 2,210 metres and close to the Puebla border. Capula comes from Nahuatl capoli (capulín, a wild cherry) and tlan (place of abundance), meaning "place where capulines abound". The patron is Saint Barnabas the Apostle, who gives the first part of the name. It had 908 inhabitants at the 2010 census and 1,050 at the 2020 census.

One administrative peculiarity: Capula is one of five localities in Natívitas where the auxiliary authority, the community president, is chosen by custom rather than party slates. In 2022 the state's Periódico Oficial lists Germán Benítez Estrada in that post. Its main building is the chapel of San Bernabé, with a yellow dome, a two-stage bell tower topped with gold cupolas, stone walls and a churchyard with a court and playground on a small rise overlooking the fields.

The Catholic calendar marks Saint Barnabas on 11 June. The municipality of Natívitas, which Capula belongs to, contains the archaeological zones of Cacaxtla and Xochitécatl, and its seat has the parish of Santa María; both help round out a visit to this part of the valley.
