Town 13 km east of Huejotzingo
A Tuscan-style village built on an old hacienda in Tlaxcala, full of restaurants and shops; popular and busy on weekends.
Val'Quirico is a newly built village in the style of medieval Tuscany, set on the plain of southern Tlaxcala about 13 kilometers east of Huejotzingo. It opened in 2014 on the grounds of a 19th-century hacienda, Santa Águeda, that had grown grain and raised cattle. The owners took their inspiration from San Quirico d'Orcia, a hill town in Tuscany, and the name means Quirico's valley.
The buildings are stone, adobe, brick and timber, with narrow lanes, small plazas, towers and arcades. It is not a historic town but a tourist and residential development, and it makes no secret of that: the streets are lined with restaurants, wine bars, bakeries, cheese and craft shops and boutique hotels.
It has become one of the most visited places in Tlaxcala, with well over a million visitors a year, so weekends and holidays are crowded. Go on a weekday morning if you want to wander the lanes in peace. The archaeological sites of Cacaxtla and Xochitécatl are close by.
What to see and do
Wander the lanes and plazas and climb to the upper streets for views over the plain.
Have lunch or a glass of wine at one of the terrace restaurants.
Browse the cheese, bread and craft shops.
Combine the visit with the murals at Cacaxtla, a short drive away.
