About San Miguel Xoxtla
San Miguel Xoxtla is the seat of the municipality of the same name on the northern edge of the Puebla metropolitan area, next to the Tlaxcala line. The name comes from the Nahuatl xóchitl, flower, and tla, abundance: "abundance of flowers". The town stands at about 2,190 m and had 12,060 people in 2020; the municipality, barely 29 km², had 12,461 in 2020.
According to the municipal history, the first settlers came from Toltec and Chichimec groups and arrived around 1156. The Spaniards subdued the area after the Cholula massacre during the Conquest. For centuries Xoxtla was part of the municipality of Tlaltenango, until its residents began the process to break away in 1934; on 15 March 1939 the Puebla congress decreed the separation, which took effect on 24 September 1940, when Xoxtla became a free municipality.
The municipality borders Tlaltenango to the south-west, Coronango to the south-east and the Tlaxcala municipalities of Natívitas, Tetlatlahuca and Zacatelco to the north. Its big celebration is the feast of Saint Michael the Archangel, the patron, which fills the town's streets.
