    About Santa María Coronango

    Santa María Coronango is the seat of the municipality of Coronango, in the Puebla-Tlaxcala metropolitan area north of Cholula. The name comes from the Nahuatl atl, water, coloa, bend, and ahco, above: "above where the water bends". The town stands at about 2,180 m and had 16,797 people in 2020.

    Tlaxcalan and Cholultec groups settled the area, in what are now the Analco, Cuapilco and San Antonio neighbourhoods. Farmers working the land have turned up painted clay plates, casseroles, pots and small faces, and surnames such as Tlaxcaltécatl, Coyotécatl and Xóchitl, common in town, recall that heritage. Under the direction of Silverio Flores, work on the church of Santa María de la Asunción began in 1521 and was finished in 1707. The patron-saint feast is on 15 August.

    The municipality, about 37 km² and nearly flat, lies in the southern part of the Atoyac River basin. The Prieto River crosses it north to south through the town and later joins the Atoyac; there are irrigation channels such as the Tlapalac and springs along the Prieto. It borders San Miguel Xoxtla, Tlaltenango, Juan C. Bonilla, San Pedro Cholula, Cuautlancingo and, on the Tlaxcala side, Zacatelco.
