About Santiago Michac
Santiago Michac sits in the Puebla-Tlaxcala valley at about 2,200 metres above sea level, roughly 4 km from the municipal seat of Natívitas and some 20 km from Tlaxcala city. At the 2020 census it had 3,867 inhabitants and is the most populous locality in the municipality, ahead of the seat itself. Its growth is long-running: 648 people in 1900, 1,245 in 1950, 3,042 in 2000 and 3,533 in 2010.
The village church is dedicated to Santiago Apóstol (Saint James the Greater), and INAFED gives the patron-saint fiesta as 23 to 26 July. Across the municipality people work basketry in huejote, willow, sotol and romerillo and make artificial flowers; local food includes tlatlapas, tlatoyos, mole de guajolote, barbacoa in mixiote and natural pulque.
The municipality keeps 19th-century haciendas with Michac in their names, such as San Antonio Michac and Segura Michac, where granaries, stables and chapels survive in varying condition. Michac elects its auxiliary authority by ballot, while five other Natívitas communities use customary law. A few kilometres away are the archaeological zones of Cacaxtla and Xochitécatl.
