About Tetlatlahuca
Tetlatlahuca, officially Santa Isabel Tetlatlahuca, is the seat of a municipality in southern Tlaxcala founded in 1822. It lies at about 2,197 metres above sea level and had 4,618 inhabitants at the 2020 census, out of 13,561 in the whole municipality. Its name is translated as place of red stones or of burning stones. It borders Zacatelco to the south and Natívitas to the southwest.
The town sits on the south and southwest slopes of the Cerro de La Cruz, whose summit and terraced slopes show occupation in the Late Preclassic, Classic and Epiclassic periods. In colonial times it depended on the head town of Ocotelulco and, religiously, on the Tepeyanco doctrine until 1640 and afterwards on Santa Inés Zacatelco; by the end of that period it had its own curacy.
The parish of Santa Isabel dates from the 19th century, with stone walls 1.20 m thick, a vaulted roof and a three-tier tower topped with a capulín. The patron saint, Santa Isabel Reina de Hungría, is honoured on 19 November with religious, secular and sporting events. Artisans work tule into petates, fans, mats and hats, and make paper flowers; local food includes mole de guajolote, barbacoa de carnero, anise tamales and honey pan de fiesta, with natural pulque.
