About San Andrés Cuamilpa

San Andrés Cuamilpa is a village in the municipality of Tetlatlahuca, in southern Tlaxcala, at about 2,340 metres. Its name comes from Nahuatl: cuahuitl (tree), milli (milpa or cultivated field) and pan (on, in), and is read as "in the wooded milpa". Its patron is Saint Andrew the Apostle, from whom it takes its name, and its yellow church with red trim and a two-stage bell tower is the most recognisable building in the village.

Census figures show a small community for much of the 20th century: 428 people in 1900, 445 in 1970 and 851 in 1980, then growth to 1,163 in 2000, 1,444 in 2010 and 1,565 at the 2020 census. For comparison, the largest in the municipality are the seat Tetlatlahuca (4,618 people in 2020, with the church of Santa Isabel), Santa Cruz Aquiahuac (4,067) and San Bartolomé Tenango (2,123). The municipality was founded in 1822 and later lost land that became San Damián Texoloc and San Jerónimo Zacualpan.

The Catholic calendar remembers Saint Andrew on 30 November. For a day trip, the seat Tetlatlahuca and Tlaxcala city are a short distance away.
