About San Lorenzo Axocomanitla
San Lorenzo Axocomanitla is the seat of a municipality that Wikipedia describes as the second smallest in Mexico, with only two localities: the town, with 5,684 people at the 2020 census, and a ranch of five. It lies about 11 km from Tlaxcala city. The name is Nahuatl and is interpreted as "place where the sour waters spread". The municipal chronicler says soldiers founded it in 1465, and a decree of 2 October 1995 made it a municipality, an anniversary the town marks every year.
The church of San Lorenzo dates from the 17th century, with a yellow plastered facade, stone walls about 80 cm thick, a vault with lunettes and two unequal towers: the right one has two levels and an iron cross, the other three, with domes and round arches. The patron festival is 10 August; if it falls on a weekday there is a midday mass with bells and fireworks and the main celebrations are the following Sunday, with mechanical rides, lotería and stalls selling festival bread and antojitos. Before that comes a novena from 1 to 9 August, paid for by the mayordomía and family donations.
In crafts, fibre basketry dominates: baskets of huejote, willow, sotol, romerillo and reed, plus wire-and-rope planters and artistic ironwork. Local tables feature mole with rice, beans and white or anise tamales, pumpkin picadillo and pulque.
