About Exconvento de Santa María Magdalena

San Martín Texmelucan grew up as a rest stop on the road between Puebla and Mexico City, and its convent tells the story. The Dieguinos, barefoot Franciscan friars, arrived in 1615 with permission to found a house in San Salvador el Verde, but the people of San Martín, then San Martín Tlauziutenco, insisted it be built in their village. The foundation was promoted by Viceroy Gaspar de Zúñiga y Acevedo, Count of Monterrey, and the church was dedicated to Mary Magdalene out of the devotion of the provincial, Fray Juan de Jesús. It was built in the first decades of the 18th century beside the Mexico City–Veracruz road, for the Franciscan Third Order.

Under the Reform Laws it passed to the state, but in 1861 Governor Miguel Cástulo de Alatriste returned the church to the Franciscans and gave the annex to the town council. A primary school opened in the orchard and cloisters in 1880; the boys' section later became a Red Cross hospital, and the girls' section is still the "Eufrosina Camacho, viuda de Ávila" primary school. On 30 October 1933 it was declared a National Monument, around 1953 talavera tiles were laid over the nave, and in 1982 it became a parish.

The front is of quarried stone with wrought iron, and above the entrance arch the Magdalene appears among geometric reliefs. The single nave, with a main dome and a smaller one, holds Churrigueresque altarpieces, oil paintings of biblical and Franciscan scenes that tradition attributes to Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, and a great German organ from 1794.
