About Villa Alta
Villa Alta is a locality in the municipality of Tepetitla de Lardizábal, in western Tlaxcala, at about 2,240 metres above sea level. It lies 4.5 km from the municipal seat, Tepetitla, and 24 km from Tlaxcala city. At the 2020 census it had 7,756 inhabitants, up from 5,974 in 2010.
Its church is dedicated to the Divino Salvador: cream-coloured with reddish trim, a three-tier bell tower with a wrought-iron balcony, and a small dome beside the nave. A local news item from 2017 says the church was built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The village is also home to the former San Pedro Rojano hacienda, which the municipal monuments catalogue describes as an 18th-century main house with whitewashed facades and stone-and-adobe walls, now split into two private properties.
The village fiesta is not the Divino Salvador's but the Señor de la Era's: a fair committee and a mayordomía organise a fair that in 2017 ran from 21 April to 7 May with the main day on 30 April, and in 2023 was announced for 21 to 29 April. For 2026 the fair committee asked the town hall for support for a programme with a queen pageant, a jaripeo rodeo, a marathon, a cycling race and the greased-pole and greased-pig contests. In the municipality people work with cane (carrizo) and make rockets and castillo fireworks, and the area lies on the Cacaxtla and Xochitécatl tourist route.
How to get to Villa Alta
Drive from San Martín Texmelucan: 5 min, 4 km
Villa Alta is about 24 km from Tlaxcala city and 4.5 km from Tepetitla de Lardizábal. The municipality is reached by highway 119 (Tlaxcala–Tepetitla–San Martín Texmelucan), about 25 km from the state capital, and from Tepetitla you take the local road to Villa Alta. From Puebla it is about 35 km and 40 minutes by car, and Huejotzingo is about 15 km away. From Mexico City the usual way is to reach San Martín Texmelucan or Puebla (CAPU terminal) and continue by road to Tepetitla. During fair days the main accesses can be blocked by protests or by the event, and there are no published schedules for direct public transport to the village.
