About Santiago Momoxpan
Santiago Momoxpan is a town in the municipality of San Pedro Cholula, between Cholula and Puebla city, about 8 km in a straight line from downtown Puebla and about 5 km from central Cholula. It stands at about 2,130 m and had 20,283 people in 2020, making it one of the municipality's most populous places. Its patron is Saint James the Apostle.
Momoxpan is now part of the urban strip joining Cholula with Puebla, within the Puebla-Tlaxcala metropolitan area. The municipality of San Pedro Cholula had 138,433 people in 2020; its seat is Cholula de Rivadavia, and its name is usually explained by the Nahuatl chololoa, "water falling".
The ground under the town has a long history: the municipality shows human settlement from the Middle Preclassic, between the 12th and 4th centuries BC, more than thirty centuries of continuous life, and ancient Cholollan was one of Mesoamerica's great ceremonial centres until the massacre of October 1519. Films such as Enamorada (1946), by Emilio "el Indio" Fernández, and La fórmula secreta (1965), by Rubén Gámez, with a text by Juan Rulfo, were shot in the municipality. For travellers, Momoxpan lies midway between Cholula's great pyramid and Puebla's historic centre.
