About Museo Nacional de los Ferrocarriles Mexicanos

On 16 September 1869 President Benito Juárez opened the Ferrocarril Mexicano line from Mexico City to Puebla, along with the station that now houses the National Museum of Mexican Railways. It was a branch of the great Mexico City–Veracruz line via Orizaba, reaching Puebla from Apizaco in Tlaxcala. The concession dated from 1857, held by the Escandón family; under the Empire it passed to a London company, and with the Restored Republic it became the Ferrocarril Mexicano. The Apizaco–Puebla stretch, directed by the English engineer William Cross Buchanan, was completed in September 1869.

Next door the Ferrocarril Mexicano del Sur later built its station for the line to Oaxaca: the Tehuacán line opened in 1891 and the Oaxaca line a year later, with Porfirio Díaz. That English-style building of limestone and brick was set on fire by revolutionary forces in 1920; of the two stations, only the Ferrocarril Mexicano's survives, today's museum.

The museum keeps rolling stock from different eras, including steam locomotives and a presidential carriage, along with objects from the national railways' offices, workshops and yards. Its galleries host temporary shows of maps, station plans, photographs, archives and books about the railway, and it has broad lawns and play areas, which makes it an easy stop with children in central Puebla.
