About Estadio Cuauhtémoc

Estadio Cuauhtémoc, known in Puebla as the "Coloso de Maravillas", is the home of Club Puebla and one of the few stadiums in the world to have hosted two World Cups. It was designed in 1965 by Pedro Ramírez Vázquez, architect of the Estadio Azteca and the Basilica of Guadalupe, and opened on 6 October 1968, on the eve of the Mexico City Olympics, with Puebla against América and a 1–1 draw between Mexico and Czechoslovakia.

At the 1970 World Cup it was Uruguay's base: on 2 June they beat Israel 2–0, and they also played Italy and Sweden here, matches that featured Sandro Mazzola and Luigi Riva, who went on to the final. In 1986 it mattered more: holders Italy played their first-round games here, and Diego Maradona scored Argentina's equaliser against them. Argentina came back in the round of 16 to beat Uruguay; then came the quarter-final between Spain and Belgium, won by Belgium on penalties, and the third-place match, in which France beat Belgium 4–2.

In 2014–2015 the state government rebuilt it completely. Capacity grew from 42,648 to about 51,726, with two new ramps and 80 boxes, and on 18 November 2015 it reopened as the first stadium in Mexico and Latin America wrapped entirely in an ETFE facade, the material of Munich's Allianz Arena. At 45.9 m from street level to roof it is the country's tallest stadium and its fifth-largest.
